Home Is Where the Cables Hang Low

Nomad Day #256

I remember my very first night in Thailand (back in 2010). I stepped off the plane and the heat hit me like a warm hug.

A couple of hours later I was sat in a beach restaurant in Surin, toes dug into the cool sand, tasting real Thai food for the first time. It was love at first sight. ❤️

I had no idea we’d end up living here for more than 12 years, or that my daughter would grow up calling Phuket home.

So when I walked out of Chiang Mai airport this week, it felt like coming home. The broken pavements, the tangled cables drooping over the street, the lawless traffic and the swarms of mopeds. Everything that might horrify a first-timer felt like a welcome mat.

Then I nipped into a 7-Eleven, and that little taped sing-song voice chirped “Hello, welcome!” as the door opened, just like it does in every 7-Eleven in the country. If you’ve been to Thailand, you’re hearing it right now.

I’m here for 8 weeks to get my head down on This Big World. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Thanksgiving and Christmas are all bearing down, and my travel cards are about as giftable as it gets. Chiang Mai is cheap, warm and full of other nomad entrepreneurs to swap notes with.

Meanwhile, I’ve left my poor husband in a chilly England, selling our investment properties, while I write this by the pool in the sun.

And yes, before you ask, that’s part of my working strategy.
