Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut? Do you sometimes feel like you have no direction or purpose?
I’ve had so many people say to me, “Jo, I just don’t know what I want to do. I don’t know where I want to end up, what my path is, or even where to start.”
There’s nothing more debilitating!
It stops you in your tracks. When you don’t know what you should be doing on a day-to-day basis, it really leaves you feeling empty and lacking in energy.
I know this because I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I had no idea what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go, or what my path to true happiness was going to be.
That’s the key question:
What is the path to true happiness?
Unfortunately, I can’t answer that specific question for you. The answer will be different for everyone.
But I can give you a simple way to help you find the path to your happiness by doing a very simple but powerful exercise.
If you’re very lucky, you’ll be able to determine the path in one fell swoop and get started towards your goals straight away. But at the very least, you can get moving in the right direction so you can find your purpose en route.
Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is….
1) Take yourself away from your normal life for a couple of hours (or longer if possible).
If you can get away for a day, that is ideal. But a couple of hours will suffice. The important thing is to really give this exercise a lot of time and thoughtful consideration.
2) Imagine yourself in the future. It can be any given timeframe.
Ideally, you should imagine yourself one year from now. If you want to start with three or six months, you certainly can. But I find that a year is great because it’s a condensed timeframe that’s also long enough to make some key changes.
Once you have imagined how you would like to be living in a year, write it down, in the present tense.
Write about who you are TODAY (in the future). Write it as if you are actually there.
Who are you? What do you look like? Where do you live? Who are you mixing with? Who are you working with? What do you do on a daily basis? What do you do for leisure? How often do you see your family? What does your house look like? Who are your friends?
So, for instance, I’d write, “What an amazing year it’s been! What an incredible year I’ve had. This is what I’ve achieved this year. I generated this income” or “I lost this many pounds,” or “I did this with my family”……etc etc”
Whatever I wanted to do or achieve that year, I wrote down.
3) A great question to ask yourself when you’re performing this exercise is, “If time, money, location, and commitment were not issues, if I had no restrictions whatsoever, what would I want to be doing with my time?”
Now, don’t just say you want to be lying on a beach! We could all say that, but we’re trying to determine the direction of your business as well.
So, when you think of your business, who do you want to be working with? What would you want to do all day, every day? If you didn’t have to worry about money, or paying a mortgage, what would you LOVE to spend your entire day doing?
This answer is your purpose.
Life has a habit of getting in the way of what we really want to do. So, you have to remove all of those obstacles and just imagine what it is that will bring you true happiness.
Think of all the details. Truly, imagine your whole life and what you would love to be doing every single day.
If you can imagine what you’d really love to be doing every single day of your life, then you will be on your way to determining the direction for your life and business.
Now, I’m not saying I’ve always achieved everything I wrote. I haven’t. Some things have taken priority above other things.
But by being completely clear on where I wanted to be in a year, I was able to establish a strong direction to follow.
By following the right path, I found purpose, I developed compelling goals, and I was able to eradicate those debilitating feelings.
I no longer felt like I was stuck in a rut. I wasn’t overwhelmed, and I stopped procrastinating.
What else can I do?
I’d love to hear what the future holds for you, so please comment below! Let me know what your goals are.
Have an amazing week, live life on purpose and Make It Happen!
