Welcome to Episode 52 of Make it Happen Monday!

Published every Monday, this is my weekly video series helping you to blast through any barriers holding up your success in life and business and giving you weekly tips and inspiration to move forward to achieve your goals and dreams.

I hate exercise. I mean, I really can’t stand it. But I really, really want to love it.

After watching a fantastic TED Talk with the ever brilliant Tony Robbins, I have found a way to not only get myself to start exercising, but to become genuinely addicted to it!

Imagine, being addicted to something you actually want to become addicted to!

And it’s not just exercise!

This tip can help you get addicted to working in your business, creating that next big program that you want to launch, or anything else.

In this week’s Make It Happen Monday, I’m talking about when it’s good to get addicted.

This week I want to talk about addiction. Now I’m afraid I can’t help you with any deep seated addictions you might have – I’m not an addiction coach!

What I want to talk about is good addiction.

For example, getting addicted to eating healthily, or to exercise, or in taking action in our businesses – addictions I’m sure you’d be glad to have!

Addiction decoded

I was recently listening to a Ted Talk by Tony Robbins. He talked about how all humans have six needs.

What are the six human needs?

• Certainty – (security, stability, knowing that things are going to happen, predictability etc.)
• Uncertainty (variety surprise, non-predictability etc.)
• Connection – (love, being around people, team spirit, bonding etc.)
• Significance – (feeling important, feeling needed etc.)
• Growth – (learning new things, growing intellectually and emotionally etc.)
• Contribution – (giving back to community, charity etc.)

The first four are the most basic human needs and, when all are being met, we’re generally happy and content.

The last two is what elevates us to total happiness and ecstasy.

Tony Robbins says that, if something meets at least three of those human needs, a human being can become addicted to that something.

This got me thinking. I started to think about various things I don’t like doing but I know I should in my personal life and my business.

What if I could create a situation where I could take a disliked task, and ensure that it meets at least three of these human needs…… Could I then become addicted to it?

Where can I apply this in all the different areas of my life?

My own case study

The first area I looked at was exercise. I have an unhealthy relationship with exercise…..I don’t do any, I don’t like it!

I want to be somebody who loves working out. One of my goals is to be flexible, fit and strong.

In order to achieve this, somehow, I need to find a deep love of exercise.

By making exercise meet at least three of my human needs, could I become addicted?

I created a chart with six columns, one each for the six human needs.

I then tried to work out how exercise meets those needs. Want to guess how many needs it met?

ONE! It meets just one human need – Certainty. I am certain I don’t like exercise!

No wonder I’m not currently addicted to exercise!

How can I make exercise meet more of my human needs?

I remembered I had fun and really enjoyed dancing when I was younger. So I thought of Zumba.

I got my chart out again and changed the activity from ‘exercise’ to ‘Zumba’ to see how this changed the number of needs met.

• I am ‘Certain’ that Zumba would be fun to do, and it will get me fitter and stronger.
• In a Zumba class, I will be surrounded by people, so I’m going to get ‘Connection.’
• I get ‘Uncertainty’ as I’ve never done much Zumba before. There are dance moves to learn, choreography, and a lot of variety.
• I get ‘Growth’ as I’m learning something new.

Now, instead of just one human need being met by exercise, Zumba was meeting four of my human needs!

There’s a very good chance I could get addicted to Zumba, which can only be a good thing.

Then I thought, how can I make Zumba meet all six human needs?

After all, that would be an addiction for life!

I decided that I needed to become a Zumba instructor! Let’s see how that affects my human needs.

• I would now get ‘Significance’ as I’d be the leader of the class, someone others look up to for inspiration and motivation.
• I would also get ‘Contribution’ as I’m giving back and helping other people become fit and strong.

See how I have taken something that barely met any of my needs, and I’ve turned it into something that meets all six of my human needs?

Get addicted!

The great thing about doing this chart is that nothing is forced.

Willpower is not necessary. You don’t need to force yourself to love something that you don’t. It all happens naturally.

By making sure that you can make a task hit as many human needs as possible, you can go from really disliking something to genuinely loving it!

For example, in my business, all the six human needs are met – no wonder I absolutely love making these videos and doing whatever it takes to move my business forward.

I’m currently having Thai lessons. This also meets all six of my human needs. I don’t have to force myself to go to my Thai lessons. I am there, eager, ready to go, because I love it so much!

Your challenge!

Your challenge this week, should you choose to accept it, is…

Make all your disliked tasks meet your human needs…..and get addicted!

1) Create a ‘human needs’ chart

Just use a sheet of paper and pen, and create six columns or boxes for each of the six human needs.

2) Test the chart

Take one or two things that you already love to do, both in your business and personal life.

Prove to yourself that the reason you love to do these things is because they meet most of your human needs. You’ll find you’ll hit at least four, and maybe even six.

3) List the things in your life that you should do but you don’t like doing

Again, use both your personal and business life.

What are the things you know you should do, things that will help achieve your goals, but you are currently not doing it for whatever reason?

4) Go through your chart and work out how to turn these things into things that meet all your needs.

Aim for all six, but even if you hit four or five, you’re now much more likely to start doing those things naturally.

These things become things that you want to do, you will love doing – it will change your life!

What else can I do?

See the comments below? I’d love to hear some of things you have convinced yourself that you don’t want to do, and how you are now turning it around into things you love to do. Let me know how you are getting on!
